Dental Implants vs Bridges vs Dentures: Which Is Right for You?

Missing a tooth? Compare dental implants, fixed bridges and removable dentures on cost in India, durability, comfort, bone health and treatment time, and find out which option suits you.

Losing a tooth affects more than your smile. Neighbouring teeth drift, chewing becomes harder and the jawbone under the gap slowly shrinks. The three ways to replace missing teeth are dental implants, fixed bridges and removable dentures. Each has its place; this guide helps you compare them.

An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth; the crown is fixed on it once it has fused with the bone.

Dental implants

An implant is a titanium screw placed in the jawbone that acts as an artificial root. After it fuses with the bone (three to six months), a crown is fixed on top. Implants can replace one tooth, several teeth or, with four to six implants, an entire arch.

Advantages: the closest thing to a natural tooth; does not touch neighbouring teeth; preserves bone; can last 20 years or more; fixed, so you eat and speak normally.

Disadvantages: highest upfront cost; needs minor surgery and healing time; requires enough healthy bone (grafting may be needed); not ideal for uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smokers.

Fixed bridges

A bridge fills a gap with an artificial tooth held by crowns on the teeth on either side. It is cemented in place and completed in about a week.

Advantages: quick; no surgery; lower cost than an implant; a good option when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns.

Disadvantages: healthy adjacent teeth must be ground down; the bone under the gap continues to shrink; harder to floss under; typically lasts 10-15 years before replacement.

Removable dentures

Dentures replace a few teeth (partial denture) or all teeth (complete denture) and are taken out for cleaning.

Advantages: lowest cost; no surgery; can replace many teeth at once; quick to make.

Disadvantages: can move while eating or speaking; reduced chewing efficiency; may irritate gums; bone loss continues and dentures need relining or remaking every few years. Implant-supported dentures that clip onto two to four implants solve most of these problems.

Which should you choose?

  • One or two missing teeth with healthy neighbours: an implant is usually the best long-term value.
  • Missing tooth with neighbours that already have large fillings or crowns: a bridge makes sense.
  • Several missing teeth on a tight budget: a partial denture now, with implants later if you wish.
  • All teeth missing: implant-supported dentures or a fixed full-arch bridge (All-on-4) give the best function; a conventional complete denture is the economical option.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Do I have enough bone for an implant, and will I need a graft?
  • Which implant and crown brands do you use, and what is the warranty?
  • What will it cost in total, including the crown and any extra procedures?
  • How many visits will I need, and over how long?
