In-clinic laser whitening, dentist-supervised home kits and over-the-counter products compared: how they work, how white your teeth can get, cost in India, side effects and how to keep results.

A whiter smile is one of the quickest ways to look younger and healthier, and professional teeth whitening is safe, predictable and far more affordable in India than most people expect. Here is how the options compare.

Professional whitening lightens teeth by four to eight shades in a single visit.

Why teeth become yellow

  • Surface stains from tea, coffee, red wine, cola, turmeric-rich food, tobacco and poor cleaning.
  • Age. Enamel thins with time, showing more of the yellower dentine underneath.
  • Internal discolouration from childhood antibiotics (tetracycline), excess fluoride, trauma or a dead nerve.

Surface and age-related yellowing respond well to whitening. Deep internal stains, and crowns, veneers and fillings, do not change colour; your dentist will tell you what to expect.

Your options

1. In-clinic (chairside) whitening

The dentist protects your gums, applies a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel and often activates it with an LED or laser light. In 60-90 minutes teeth lighten by four to eight shades. It is the fastest and most controlled option, ideal before a wedding or an event.

2. Dentist-supervised home whitening

Custom trays are made from impressions of your teeth and you wear them with a lower-strength carbamide peroxide gel for a few hours a day or overnight for one to three weeks. Results are similar to in-clinic whitening, slower but longer-lasting, and the trays can be reused for top-ups.

3. Combination

Chairside whitening followed by a home kit gives the best and most durable result for heavily stained teeth.

4. Over-the-counter products

Whitening toothpastes remove only surface stains and cannot change the tooth's colour. Strips and pens contain low concentrations of peroxide and give modest results with one-size-fits-all trays that can irritate gums. Charcoal powders and lemon or baking soda remedies are abrasive or acidic and damage enamel.

Is whitening safe?

Yes, when done or supervised by a dentist on healthy teeth. Peroxide whitening has decades of research behind it and does not damage enamel. The two common side effects, temporary sensitivity and mild gum irritation, settle within a day or two. Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy, for children under 16, or on teeth with untreated decay or gum disease, which is why a check-up comes first.

What to expect at the clinic

  1. Examination and cleaning to remove surface stains and tartar.
  2. Shade recorded and photographed.
  3. Gum protection applied, gel placed and activated in two or three cycles.
  4. Fluoride or desensitising gel applied afterwards.
  5. Home-care instructions and, if chosen, custom trays for maintenance.

How long do results last?

Typically one to three years, depending on diet and habits. To keep teeth white: avoid staining foods and drinks for 48 hours after treatment, use a straw for coffee and cola, do not smoke, brush twice daily, and have a cleaning every six months. A home-kit top-up once or twice a year maintains the shade.

Alternatives when whitening is not enough

For teeth that are deeply stained, worn, chipped or uneven, veneers, bonding or crowns can transform the smile; a cosmetic dentist can show you what is possible.
