From sending your X-rays to booking your return flight: a practical checklist for planning dental treatment in India, with recommended stay lengths for each treatment.
A dental trip works best when the treatment is planned before you book the flight. This checklist takes you from the first email to your follow-up at home, so there are no surprises on arrival.
Book flights only after the clinic has confirmed your appointment dates.
Step 1: Get a diagnosis at home
Visit a local dentist for an examination and ask for digital copies of your X-rays, or an OPG (panoramic X-ray) and, for implants, a CBCT scan. Clinics in India can prepare a far more accurate plan and quote from good images than from a description.
Step 2: Shortlist clinics
Use Dentavya's clinic search to compare dentists by city, speciality, experience and reviews. Shortlist two or three clinics that treat international patients and have the specialist you need (an implantologist, prosthodontist or endodontist, depending on the work).
Step 3: Get written treatment plans
Send your records and ask each clinic for a written plan covering the procedures, materials and brands, number of visits, days needed, total cost and warranty terms. Ask how they handle complications and follow-up after you return home. Compare the plans, not just the prices.
Step 4: Decide how long to stay
| Treatment | Minimum stay | Notes |
| Cleaning, whitening, fillings | 1-2 days | Usually completed in one sitting |
| Root canal with crown | 4-7 days | Crown made by the lab in 3-5 days |
| Crowns, bridges, veneers | 5-8 days | Trial fitting before the final cementing |
| Dental implants (conventional) | Two trips: 3-5 days, then 5-7 days after 3-6 months | Healing between placement and crown |
| Immediate-load implants / All-on-4 | 7-12 days | Temporary teeth fitted in days; final set on a later visit |
| Wisdom tooth removal | 4-6 days | Allow time for stitches check and swelling to settle before flying |
| Dentures | 6-10 days | Several measurement and trial appointments |
Step 5: Arrange your visa
Most nationalities can apply online for an Indian e-Visa. A tourist e-Visa is enough for short treatment; for longer or repeated stays the Medical e-Visa is designed for patients and allows attendants to accompany you. Apply at least two weeks before travel and carry a printed copy.
Step 6: Book flights and accommodation
Book flights only after the clinic confirms your appointment dates, and leave a buffer of one or two days at the end for any adjustments. Stay within easy reach of the clinic; many clinics will recommend nearby hotels or serviced apartments and some arrange airport pickup.
Step 7: Sort out payment
Confirm in writing how and when you pay. Most clinics accept international debit and credit cards and bank transfers; some offer a discount for cash in rupees. Tell your bank you will be using your card in India. Ask for an itemised invoice: some insurers reimburse part of the cost, and you will need it for any warranty claim.
Step 8: Prepare for the appointments
- Carry all X-rays, scans, your medical history and a list of medicines you take.
- If you have diabetes, heart disease or take blood thinners, bring a note from your physician.
- Stop smoking before implant surgery if you can; it significantly improves healing.
- Plan rest days after surgical procedures rather than sightseeing immediately.
Step 9: Before you fly home
- Collect digital copies of all records, X-rays, the final treatment report and the implant passport or crown details.
- Get written after-care instructions and a list of warning signs that need attention.
- Ask for the clinic's email or WhatsApp number for follow-up questions.
- Do not fly within 24-48 hours of surgery, and avoid flying with an untreated infection.
Step 10: Follow-up at home
Arrange a check-up with your local dentist a few weeks after you return, and keep regular cleaning appointments. Implants and crowns last longest with good daily care and a professional cleaning every six months.
